Omega-3-Acid Ethyl Esters

Overview

Omega-3-acid ethyl esters contains triglycerides of of the omega-3 fatty acids, perticularly eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. In fish these fatty acids are the precursors of eicosanoids and when taken by men Omega-3-acid ethyl esters compete with the precursor arachidonic acid, and their actions include hypolipidaemia (especially reduction in triglycerides level), anti-inflammatory action and anti-platelet effect. Fish oils are the source of omega-3 triglycerides and preparations such as omega-3 marine triglycerides are thus used in patients with severe hypertriglyceridaemia. These preparations are widely used as a dietary supplements.
