Calcipotriol
Overview
Calcipotriol is a synthetic analogue of vitamin D, a fat soluble sterol, sometimes considered to be hormone or hormone precursor. Calcipotriol is involved in promoting normal bone development in body by regulating calcium, phosphorus and minerals. Vitamin D is a secosteroid and sometimes popularly known as the 'sunshine vitamin' because formed in the skin from 7-dehydrocholesterol under the influence of ultraviolet irradiation. Calcipotriol is also found in certain food. Fish liver oils, especially code liver oil are good sources of vitamin D.
Calipotriol effects cell division and differentiation. At the cellular level the action of calcipotriol is very similar preparation for psoriosis to that of the natural hormones calcitriol or 1, 25 dihydroxy Vit D where or its systemic effects on Ca.

Warning / Precautions
Calcipotriol should be used with caution in elderly. It should not be used in patients with disorder of calcium metabolism and with a history of hypersensitivity reactions. Ointment should not be used on the face since the ointment formulation may give rise to irritation of the facial skin. Careful hand washing after use is recommended. It is classified as pregnancy category C should be used only when the benefit of therapy outweighs the risk to fetus. It should be used with caution in generalized pustular or erythrodermic exfoliative psoriasis.Avoid use in face and excessive exposure to sun light and sunlamps.
